First IC Filter placed at Noordwest Hospital Group in Alkmaar

In the ICU, patients are given large doses of drugs, including many antibiotics. The urine of almost all patients is stored in a catheter bag. These bags are emptied into the sewer several times a day. This releases large amounts of drug residues into the environment and creates risks for the development of antibiotic resistance.
Noordwest Hospital Group is the first in the world to apply the IC Filter. They empty the contents of catheter bags into a small filter system. They can also dispose of liquid residual medication in the system. In this way, the discharge of medicine residues into the environment limits, risks of developing antibiotic resistance decrease and costs for specific hospital waste can be reduced.
